Established in memory of Dr Bruce Nisbet and Dr Rod Hammond, two great geoscientists who were work colleagues and friends and tragically died within months of each other in 2006.Each had an exceptional grasp of the key connections between geological systems and mineralisation, and how those connections could be applied in exploration targeting for new deposits. Bruce and Rod were also inspirational teachers, and mentored a generation of structural geologists and explorationists in Australia, Latin America and Zambia.

In 2007, a new upper secondary course, Earth and Environmental Science (EES) was introduced in Western Australia. The development and implementation of the course was supported by Earth Science Western Australia (ESWA), a consortium of universities, the CSIRO, Minerals Industry partners, Oil and Gas Industry partners and other public and private organisations.

The role of ESWA is to support the teaching of earth science in schools by developing teaching and learning resources, providing professional development for teachers and to assist with field experiences for students. Since 2008, EES has been offered in 25 schools with 417 students enrolled increasing to 667 in 2010.
